It is with sadness and with gratitude for God's grace, that the family shares the news that George W. Hammon, Sr., 93, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on April 19, 2022, in Maryville, TN. He was born in Guild, TN, the fourth child of E.M. Hammon, Sr and Shelly Mathews Hammon. A man of great and enduring faith, he was at peace with his Lord and the full and vibrant life he led. We believe he has now heard those precious words, "well done, good and faithful servant."
George exemplified a life well lived as a person who was always continually learning. He consistently strove to reaffirm others, and build their confidence to succeed as he treated them with dignity and respect. A hallmark of George's contribution to family, friends and community is a legacy of dignity, generosity and graciousness, a true Southern gentleman in the best sense of the word.
George was a retired Senior Executive with the DuPont Company with over forty years of service. In that capacity, he had an opportunity to experience living and working in various parts of the Eastern part of the US. While working, George was an active church and community leader in the various locations he lived. He and his wife Julia made moving an exciting opportunity to meet new people, explore new locations and local foods and experience new areas of the country. George and Julia made many enduring friendships with his DuPont colleagues and their families, many who became "like family." George and Julia loved to travel, whether family camping trips across the country or international excursions.
George was the consummate devoted husband, father, and family man. He was a builder, an explorer, and enjoyed a visionary perspective on life. There were very few things that George could not build, fix, or do. He was an accomplished woodworker, mechanic, builder, and all-around improviser. Many items created by George continue to be legacy pieces for family members. Together, George and Julia were master entertainers. Whether it was for family or friends, George had the ability to make each guest feel special and welcomed all to his table. George was in every sense a compassionate gentleman that valued decency and moral courage, and was known as the consummate story teller.
In addition to his parents, George was predeceased by his beloved wife, soulmate and best friend of 68+ years, Julia Sisson Hammon; and, his siblings, Manley Hammon, James C Hammon, Sr., Gerald Hammon, Ila Franklin, Etta Arnold and Vivian Turner, as well as beloved in-laws.
He is survived by sons G. William Hammon, Jr. (Cathy), R. Timothy Hammon (Kathleen), Michael S. Hammon (Amy); and daughter, Letha A. Hammon (Bland Dickey); grandchildren, G. William Hammon III (Brittany), C. Elizabeth Hammon (Patrick Nichols), Julia C. Hammon, Madeline A. Hammon, Quinn G. Hammon, Bennett M. Hammon; great grandchildren, Bailey J. Hammon, Lillian H. Nichols, G. William Hammon IV and Imogene H. Nichols; brother E. Mat Hammon, Jr. (Beverly), and many much loved Hammon nieces and nephews and Sisson nephew.
