Gerlinde Maria Mellar (nee Muller) passed away at home on November 12, 2020.
She was born in Gunzenhausen, Germany on September 28, 1936, to parents, Frieda Meyer and Georg Muller. In 1960, Gerlinde immigrated to the United States to be a nanny to a family in Fairfield, Connecticut. One day while at the German Club with some other German nannies, she met her future husband, Steven Mellar. They started a family and eventually moved to Vermont. Gerlinde is survived by her husband, Steven and her four children, Steven, James, Michael and Diana. She is also survived by her daughter-in-law, Marion; her grandchildren, Alexander and Stephanie and a sister, Berta Ringler in Germany.
Gerlinde was an excellent gardener, forager, cook, mathematician and most of all, a wonderful wife and mother. She had some interesting occupations through the years, including a nanny, school bus driver, Labrador retriever breeder, sewing factory worker and housekeeper. Gerlinde found most of her joy being at home, raising her children, working in her gardens and loving her family.
Her laughter and smile will be greatly missed. There will be a private burial ceremony at the Hunt Cemetery in Tunbridge, VT. Details of a public memorial service will be announced at a future date. Memorial contributions may be made to local fire or ambulance service of one's choice.
A private message of sympathy for the family can be shared at www.boardwayandcilley.com. Arrangements are under the direction of the Boardway & Cilley Funeral Home in Chelsea, VT.
