George Ronald "Ron" Coy Wimberley, 77 passed away at his home surrounded by his family on May 16, 2021. He was born August 13, 1943 in Lubbock, TX to Russell Elwood and Velda Wimberley.
One of the highlights of his youth was in 1955 going to the Boy Scouts Jamboree in New York taking Horny Toads to sell. He graduated from Lubbock High School in 1961. Ron was on the swim team and this love of the water was his step to enlist in the US Navy from in 1963-1967. He was a gunner's mate and a plank owner on the USS Tripoli. He was in the Reserves until 1969.
He was the owner of a construction company before going into the material testing business. He was with Lubbock Labs for 45 years until his retirement in 2019.
Ron enjoyed working on cars and driving fast. He did some drag racing in Dallas. In later years he built a stock car in his garage to race at Lubbock Motor Speedway. He was Rookie of the Year in 1991.
Ron was a true "Jack of all trades." He was a hard worker and very meticulous. He poured his heart into his work and made every effort to "do it right the first time," and most of the time, he was successful.
Ron married the love of his life, Patsy, on August 5, 1982. They did everything together and enjoyed road trips especially to the mountains. They knew they were soul mates from the beginning. He promised her "99 and ugly" and in true Ron fashion, he gave it his all.
Ron is survived by his wife of 38 years, Patsy; their daughters, Stephanie White (Byron), Shea McElwee (David) and Shannon Overland (Clint); 8 grandchildren, Tyler Brewer (Alyssa), Dalton Atkins (Leandra), Rylie Brewer, Ryan Rowell, Danielle White, Talon Overland, Cheyenne Paschal (Mike) and Jesse Overland; 1 great-grandchild, William Brewer; 2 sisters, Joni McIlvain and Sheila Davis; 1 brother, Russell "Buddy" Wimberley (Linda); multiple nieces and 1 nephew. Long-time friends Tommy and Sue McDonald and Tom DeLavan are only a few who will miss him.
