Goshen - George H. Vander Wey, 86, was met by his gracious and loving Lord and Savior, Wednesday, Dec. 16 at Goshen Hospital.
He was born Aug. 18, 1934 in Anderson to Seigel O. and Evelyn R. (Kinkead) Vander Wey.
On Aug. 18, 1962 he married his beloved wife, Janet Fry in Goshen.
She survives along with three children, George Ryan (Pam) Vander Wey, Rodney (Lisa) Vander Wey and Rebecca Manns, all of Goshen; seven grandchildren, Tory (Ashley) Vander Wey, Taylor (Brad) Howard, Ashley (Josh) Fletcher, Randy (Mindy) Cripe, Kara (Erick) Villegas, Jenna and Anna Vander Wey; and 14 great grandchildren.
Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Orrie S. Vander Wey and a sister, Martha Lee Jeffer.
A graduate of the Fort Wayne Art Institute, George began his career as a commercial artist in Kalamazoo, Michigan. He continued to work as a patent writer for Robert Shaw controls. He started his own masonry business, Vander Wey & Sons in 1959, which is carried on by his two sons. He retired a year ago at age 85.
George was a lifetime member of Greene Road Church, Goshen, where he served in leadership roles and was a founder of the cadet program. He was a generous man who never knew a stranger.
He continued his artistic hobbies with painting and photography, often developing his own photos.
Visitation will be Saturday, Dec. 26 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home, Goshen followed by a 1:30 p.m. funeral service. Following the Elkhart County Health Dept. mandate, masks and limited numbers will be required.
Burial will take place at West Goshen Cemetery.
