George Thomas Lasater passed away at home on Friday May 27, 2022 after a long decline in his health.
George was born in Flint, Michigan on June 22, 1937 to Lucian and Grace Lasater. He graduated from Paragould Arkansas High School in 1955 where he lettered in football and basketball. He then enlisted in the United States Air Force where he served 4 years as a medic and surgical assistant. After the Air Force he attended Arkansas State University where he earned his Bachelor of Education Degree. He taught at Wayne Memorial School, in metro Detroit, where he met and married Margaret (Hawley) Lasater. They moved to Boyne City where they raised three children, Amii, Thomas and George. George taught 4th grade at the Morgan Shaw School then took a job as a District Court Probation Officer in Emmet County. During that time he began his law enforcement career with the Charlevoix County Sheriff’s Office.
In 1977 George began his 32 year career as the Sheriff of Charlevoix County. At his retirement in 2008 he was the longest serving sheriff in Michigan. After retiring from the Sheriff’s Office he began a career as a private investigator and was elected as a Charlevoix County Commissioner. George was a member of the Boyne City American Legion and was instrumental in creating and funding the Boyne City Veterans memorial by authoring 2 books on area veterans.
George will be remembered as a compassionate and fair lawman who always went out of his way to treat people as he would like to be treated.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and wife Margaret, who passed away in November 2019. He is survived by his children Amii Adams and her husband John, Thomas and Tracy Conti, George and Melissa and his three grandchildren, Nikolas Husak and his wife Marlette, Jillian Husarenko and her husband Joey and Luke Thomas Lasater. He was blessed with 2 great grandchildren, Piper Husarenko and Everleigh Husak.
The family would like to thank Heather Garcia, Misty Valentine, Monica Vallance and Michelle Koons for the wonderful care they provided George this past year.
A memorial service will be held 11:00 AM on Monday, June 6th at Walloon Lake Community Church.
