"As death gives way to victory, I'll see the lights of glory and know He reigns." For decades, George Martin Herzog, Jr. prayed daily, naming each of his children, and as they married, their families. George was born June 14, 1952 in Navasota, Texas, and was raised on the Herzog family farm in Dobbin. He graduated from Texas A&M University with a degree in Dairy Science in 1974, married his forever love, Nancy L. McClendon, the next month on June 29, and worked with his dad and brother on the farm for another twenty years. The Herzog farm was the last long-standing dairy in Montgomery County. In 1994 the farm converted to beef cattle, and George went to work for Montgomery County Precinct 2. He enjoyed whatever job he held during that time, whether driving the dump truck, operating the Grade-all, or supervising his crews.
George often joked, quoting the line, "Oh Lord, it's hard to be humble," yet humbleness was a characteristic that flowed easily from his spirit. He was principled, yet non-judgmental. He spoke in truth, yet never denigrated others. He was content, not seeking for himself, but always ready to serve, not only his family, but his community. He was steadfast and devoted to his family because he regarded it as "the right thing to do." His faith was genuine and straightforward.
George was a patriot who believed in the principles upon which this country was founded. He believed that life begins at conception. His volunteer work reflected his beliefs.
"Children are a heritage of the Lord... happy is the man that has his quiver full of them." George and Nancy were blessed with six children and six more when they married. George was 'Pawpaw' to 32 grandchildren; four in heaven, twenty-six age fifteen and under, and two on the way. Stephanie and Rev. Brian Forbes of Nebo, NC. Katherine and (Veteran Navy Petty Officer Third Class) DPS Trooper IV Ryan Parker of College Station, TX, and their children: Mick, Anna, and Cali. Houston Fire Department Captain Stephen and Christina Herzog of Dobbin, TX, and their children: Martin, Amellia, Isabella, Elaina, James, Lydia, Augustus, Marilla, Sonora, Theodore, Jasper, Silas, and Orianna. (Veteran Army Major) Keith and Karen Herzog of San Antonio, TX, and their children: Evelyn, Adeleine, Gretel, and Duncan. (Veteran Navy Petty Officer Second Class) Kevin and Grace Herzog of Coronado, CA. Sarah and Associate/Worship Pastor Josh Masters of Dobbin, TX, and their children: Ein, Abby, Paisley, Lincoln, Isaiah, and Olivian.
George is also survived by his siblings: Margaret Bailey of Houston, TX, Pam and Richard Elms of Dobbin, TX, Marilyn and Tommy Sullivan of Dobbin, TX, Larry and Delena Herzog of Dobbin, TX, brother-in-law Kenny Sechelski of Anderson, TX, and a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Pauline and George M. Herzog Sr., and sister, Linda Sechelski.
From his wife, Nancy: "George was a rock. He was faithful to his God, his family, his church, his community and his country. As a family, we would like to thank everyone for their overwhelming love and support during this time. I have literally been able to "feel" the love of our Savior, Jesus Christ, through you."
In lieu of flowers, donations to either pro-life organization, Preborn.org or abortionworker.com, would honor George's life.
