After a long and courageous battle with a lengthy terminal illness, our Uncle George Arturo Guerra passed away on January 1st, 2025. Born in McAllen, Texas on August 31st, 1947 he was lovingly raised by his parents Maria G Guerra & Jesus M. Guerra. A great blessing he was to our precious Grandmother Dona Maria. Throughout his childhood he was our dear mothers, Alicia Guerra Anzaldua's shadow. Especially when Alicia and Andy Anzaldua went on numerous dates while courting, George at an early age 5 was always their chaperone and enjoyed sitting in the back of the jeep while on their dates.
Uncle George was a proud graduate of McAllen High School Class of 1969. While in high school he obtained his hairdresser's license; many of his first clients were his classmates. The first salon that he worked at was a seven station beauty salon on South 17th Street owned by his sister, Estella. Officially, he started working at the House of Beauty on S. 10th Street. There, he acquired a majority of his clientele that would follow him wherever he went. In addition, he worked at various other local salons such as; On Stage Hair Salon, Headlines Hair Salon, Illusions and lastly Kuressence. The industry and it's advancements were very important to Uncle George. He sat on the board of The Hairdressers Association, and competed against other professionals where he usually came home with 1st place trophy's. He was recognized on a state level for his talent in his trade. Taking young Hairdressers under his wing was important to him.
Uncle George was big on community work. He worked with Cancer patients, Easter Seals, Mujeres Unidas and helped as many people as he could with his trade.
Those of us that knew him personally, knew him well, and all his eccentricities.
He was generous with his trade and his person as a hairdresser always expecting the best from his colleagues and always had very high standards for his trade. It will be a great loss to the industry and the people he affected during his lifetime.
Uncle George was preceeded in death by his parents Jesus and Maria Guerra, siblings; Joe G. (Lillie Mae+) Guerra, Ramiro "Penny" (Millie) Guerra, Maria "Estella" (Amador+) Hinojosa, Hilda "Marre" (Santos+) Ceballos, and Alica G. (Andy+) Anzaldua and Arturito Guerra.
