George Edward Evans, age 93, passed away peacefully on January 30, 2026, after a long, rich life devoted to family, education, and the great outdoors.
Born on August 31, 1932, George spent his early childhood living at Montana Power's Morony Generating Plant north of Great Falls, where he lived from 1932 to 1945. In 1945, his family moved to a farm in Simms, Montana, where George later graduated from high school in 1950. That same year, he relocated to Bozeman, Montana, a place that would become the heart of his life, career, and community.
George proudly served in the United States Army from 1953 to 1955 and was stationed at Fort Ord, California. Following his military service, he returned to Montana State College, earning a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture in 1957. His passion for learning and horticulture led him to complete a Master of Science in Ornamental Horticulture in 1958, and later a PhD in Ornamental Horticulture from Michigan State University in 1970.
On September 18, 1955, George married the love of his life, Barbara "Bobbe" Evans. Together, they built a life rooted in love and shared adventures and were blessed with two children, Ron Evans and Lynda (Evans) Mikkola.
George dedicated more than three decades to Montana State University, serving as a professor from 1962 until his retirement in 1996. Through his teaching, mentorship, and commitment to education, he left a lasting impression on generations of students.
Beyond the classroom, George lived life with curiosity and enthusiasm. He was actively involved in the Gallatin Valley Snowmobile Association for many years and shared a special bond with his son, Ron, through five years of dirt track auto racing, a passion he deeply cherished.
In retirement, George earned his student pilot's certificate and found immense joy flying across the Montana skies. He and Bobbe were actively involved in Good Sams, loved to travel and spent several winters together in Yuma, Arizona.
George was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Barbara "Bobbe" Evans, and his brothers, Robert Evans and Harvey Evans. He is survived by his brother, Edwin (Phylis) Evans; his son, Ron Evans; daughter, Lynda (Larry) Mikkola; grandchildren, Scott Evans, Ryan (Amy) Mikkola, Katie (Morgan) Bishop, and Kyle (Cassie Costello) Mikkola; and two very special great-granddaughters, Madison and Isabella Martinez.
George will be remembered for his kindness, sharp sense of humor, lifelong curiosity, and deep love for his family and the adventures that filled his life.
A Celebration of Life will be held in the Spring, and details will be announced. Arrangements are in the care of Dokken-Nelson Funeral Service. www.dokkennelson.com
