George (Bud) Maynard Demmons, Jr., 83 of Pittsburg, NH, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his wife and sons on Tuesday, Dec. 8, 2020, after a long fight with cancer.
Bud was born on May 1, 1937, in Newton, MA, to George Demmons, Sr. and Louise (Macdonald) Demmons. At age 10 his family moved to West Nottingham, NH, where his family operated Demmons General Store. Bud attended the Nottingham Elementary School and graduated from Coe-Brown Northwood Academy, afterward attending the Thompson School at UNH for Animal Husbandry, Class of '57. He then went on to work for the NH Soil Conservation and lived in Keene before joining the US Navy in 1958.
Bud traveled the world and served onboard 5 submarines, and at one point went to the North Pole during an IceEX aboard the nuclear attack submarine, USS Billfish, SSN-676. He completed his career as a Navy Recruiter in Concord and Dover and had his retirement ceremony aboard the USS Constitution, surrounded by family and friends in 1981.
After retirement from the Navy, Bud worked for Craig Supply in Durham, NH, until 1986, when he and his family moved to Pittsburg, where he lived until he passed. He was an avid outdoorsman, spending many happy times fishing with his family and friends on Lake Chibougamau in Quebec, and camping & hunting across New England and Canada.
He was active in the community and in his younger days held many memberships including : life member in the VFW, Joe Jeffrey Post #7217, Life Member of the National Rifle Association, DAV Chapter 18 of Manchester, member of Evening Star Lodge #37, F&AM in Colebrook, member of the American Legion Post #17 Groveton, and past president of the Border Lions Club in Canaan, VT.
Bud is survived by his wife of 53 years, Dorothy "Dottie" (Dodge) Demmons of Pittsburg; his son and daughter in-law, Daniel & Gretchen Demmons of Westerly, RI; son Samuel Demmons of Pittsburg; sister Mary Lou Delamater of Lynnfield, MA; brother William Demmons of The Villages, FL; brother Richard Demmons of Wasilla, AK; grandsons Jack & Greyson Demmons, granddaughters Sadie & Mirabella Demmons; and many nieces and nephews.
Bud is predeceased by his parents, his son Lonny Demmons, his brother Clive Demmons, and his brother-in-law William Delamater.
There are no public calling hours or services scheduled. Bud will be privately buried at sea with a. memorial services to be held sometime later in 2021.
