George Kenneth Bowman, Sr., "Ears" was born May 12, 1938 in Washington County, Va. And died July 30, 2021 in Powell, TN. George grew up in Abingdon, Va. And attended William King High School. He graduated from Emory & Henry College in 1963. He was a four year baseball letterman and held Emory & Henry records for his batting average (.441) single season and batting average (.591) career hits and doubles. He also pitched and served as assistant coach during his senior year. Following his years at college, he played semi-pro at Greeneville, Tennessee and Saltville, Virginia. In addition to his post graduate career, George was active in Washington County schools where he taught and coached for 28 years. During this time, he lived in Bristol, Virginia and was Coach of the Year at Holston High School. He went on to coach at Virginia Intermont College where his son Ken played baseball and coached. George was a member of Callahan Road Baptist Church. In 2008 he and his wife Martha moved to Powell to be near their son Ken and his wife Shannon. George was preceded in death by his parents M.V. and Gaye Bowman; his brothers Pete Bowman, Robert Bowman, and sister Doris Umberger. He is survived by his wife Martha Cassell Bowman, son Ken and wife Shannon Bowman, brother Mack Bowman, Watkinsville, Georgia; sisters Betty Hurd, Knoxville TN. And Ruth Collier, Kingsport, TN, along with many nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, August 3, 2021 for 1:00 - 2:00 pm at Callahan Road Baptist Church, with a Funeral Service following at 2:00 pm. Pastor Mark Sasser will officiate. Family and friends are asked to meet by 12:45 pm on Wednesday, August 4, 2021 in Forest Hills Cemetery, Abingdon, VA. for a 1:00 pm graveside service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Emory & Henry Baseball, The American Diabetes Association or to Callahan Road Baptist Church.
