Gaylord John "Jake" Matson, 82, of Haxtun, Colorado passed away Thursday afternoon, December 24, 2020 at the Regional West Garden County Nursing Home in Oshkosh. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, January 5, 2021 at the Hillside Cemetery in Julesburg with Pastor Jeri Soens of the Haxtun Methodist Church officiating. Memorials in Jake's name can be made to the Haxtun Methodist Church (106 South Washington Ave. Haxtun, Colorado 80731). Holechek-Bondegard Funeral Home and Cremations in Oshkosh is serving the Matson family. Jake was born on March 30, 1938 in Culbertson, Nebraska to Clyde and Irene (Isaac) Matson, the youngest of 5 children. Attended country school near Trenton and high school in Trenton. On March 31, 1955 he was inducted into the United States Navy. He served his country for 4 years and was discharged on March 2, 1959. He married briefly and had 2 sons in Washington. After they divorced, he moved to Denver where he met and married Marilyn (Kizer) Gette in 1963. Along with Marilyn came 2 sons, Larry and Gary. Jake worked various jobs while moving to Trenton Nebraska and Yuma Colorado before settling in Julesburg. Jake and Marilyn returned to Denver for Jake to work on highway construction. He retired in 2000 and they bought a home in Haxtun where they resided for the remainder of his years. They attended the Haxtun Methodist Church, and he was baptized there. Jake enjoyed hunting and fishing, going to the lake, and was always looking forward to the next auction. He enjoyed restoring old cars. He is survived by his wife, Marilyn; 2 stepsons, Larry (Becky) Gette and Gary (Angel) Gette; siblings, Neioma McGuire of Texas, Wynona Shackleford of Trenton, Joe (Thelma) Matson of Trenton, and Gloria (Ron) Bricker of Grand Junction, Colorado; numerous step-grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and other family members. He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 brothers-in-law, Alan McGuire and Dean Shackleford and infant twin sisters, Angela and Alvira.
