Help us celebrate Gary! Please share your stories and photos, and invite others who remember Gary.
Gary Kirby Myers of Cumming, GA (formerly from Lexington and Winston-Salem, NC) passed away on March 31, 2023. He was born to the late Sam and Mildred Myers in Thomasville, NC on July 29, 1936. He was preceded in death on September 25, 2019 by the love of his life, his wife Shelby Sprinkle Myers. They were sweethearts for two years and were married for 64 years and 3 months. They had a glorious and beyond wonderful life together. Gary graduated from Lexington Senior High School, Lexington, NC, and Shelby graduated from Gray High School in Winston-Salem, NC.
Gary is survived by two sons, Mark Myers and Matthew Myers (Brenda); two grandchildren, Hannah Hinton (Andrew) and Cody Myers (Amanda); and two great grandsons Easton Myers and Ryder Myers with another great grandson expected later this year. Last, but not least, Gary is also survived by his constant companion, a Morkie named Buttons.
He worked at the Western Electric Co. (AT&T), Winston-Salem, NC for 12 years before transferring to the AT&T Region Headquarters in Sandy Springs, GA in 1971. He transferred to the AT&T cable plant in 1983. He retired in 1994 after 35 years of service. Gary and Shelby lived in Dunwoody, GA for 34 years, and then moved to Cumming, GA in 2005 to be closer to their family. They had a second home on Lake Oconee for 30 years and thoroughly enjoyed it but sold it in March 2019 after it became too much maintenance.
Gary was a great lover of sports: Dawgs on Saturday, Falcons on Sunday, Braves and golf all year. He was an avid fisherman and hunter in his younger days with his two sons. Later, he gave it up to play golf. He will be deeply missed, but his family finds comfort because he is with Shelby again.
Gary and Shelby lived on a cul-de-sac in a subdivision in northern Forsyth County. They had wonderful neighbors that looked after one another, and particularly Gary after Shelby passed away. Alphabetically, said neighbors are the Beans, Kaufmans, Mizers, and Simmonds.
