Gary Donothan Hartness, 72, of Long Beach, Mississippi, passed away on Wednesday, December 8, 2021.
Visitation will be Sunday, December 12, 2021 from 1:00 - 3:00 pm with a funeral service immediately following at Parkway Funeral Home in Ridgeland. Graveside services will be on Monday, December 13, 2021 at 12:00 noon at Chapel Hill Cemetery in Big Creek, Mississippi.
Gary was born on July 25, 1949 in Starkville, MS to Davis Donothan Hartness and Mattie Lee Ray.
He is preceded in death by his father and his sister, Patrice Singlar.
He is survived by his wife, Donna Hartness; mother, Mattie L. Price; daughter, Gennifer Taloney; grandchildren, Chandler and Barron Taloney; siblings, Darryl Hartness, Donny Hartness, John Hartness, Brenda Brooks, Glenda Tranum, Brian Hartness and Candi Vezina; and mother-in-law, Carolyn Bounds Goff.
Gary enjoyed reading, hunting, researching history, and writing. He wrote the book Jes' Folks: Hartness Ancestors 1760 - 1865, a four generation story of the experiences of ordinary people in his family. He graduated from the University of Southern Mississippi, and was enrolled in graduate school at Mississippi State University at the time of his passing. He worked as a locomotive engineer with Rail America until it was bought by Alabama Gulf Coast Railway and he was trained as a conductor as well as an engineer.
