Garrett John Thrasher, Sr. died peacefully on February 26th surrounded by his family. Garry was born on June 9th 1935 to Clarke Edward Thrasher and Helen Rehr Thrasher in Buffalo, NY. He went to high school in East Aurora, NY and graduated from Princeton University with a mechanical engineering degree in 1958. He was on the baseball team at Princeton, sitting on the bench during his whole PU career! He spent three years as an infantry officer in the US Marine Corps, before obtaining a MS and PhD degrees in engineering from University of Pennsylvania in 1965 and 1969, respectively. (Garry left graduate school in 1965 after his father-in-law asked him "When are you going to get a job?!"). He obtained his PhD while working for United Technologies Corporation in Hartford, CT from 1965 to 1977.
On June 27, 1959, Garry married Judith Fleckser Dorries in Buffalo, NY. They met on a blind date, she taking the train from Smith College up to Princeton. They lived their first years together in Camp Lejeune, NC, where Garry was a marine. Garry and Judy subsequently then lived in Philadelphia, PA, Manchester, CT and Clarence, NY before settling in Lyme, NH. In Lyme, Garry and Judy built a strong community of friends who traveled and had lots of fun together. Garry died never knowing Judy's winning strategy in the game Gin Rummy. They had three children: Garrett Jr., Michael and Barbara.
After working for United Technologies Corporation, Garry worked for Praxair, Inc. in Tonawanda, NY from 1977-1995. He and Judy then retired to Lyme.
Garry was predeceased by his parents, his wife Judy in 2011, and brothers Clarke, Jr. and Craig. He is survived by his sons Garry, Jr. and his wife Sarah of Vershire, VT; Michael and wife Peg of St. Paul, MN; and daughter Barbara (Bo) and husband Paul Butler of Mazama, WA, and seven grandchildren: Sam (Paul), Ash (Chris), Ellie (Michael), Cassidy, Grace and Jed and step-granddaughter Sydney Schoenbeck; seven great-grandchildren: Clover, Grady, Clyde, Ernie, Lee, Max and Ezzie; sister-in-law Eileen Thrasher and Margaret Thrasher of East Aurora, NY; and many nieces and nephews; and his companion and friend Jane Fant.
A memorial will be held at 11 am on Saturday, May 13th at the Lyme Congregational Church in Lyme, NH. Donations can be made to the Norris Cotton Cancer Center, One Medical Center Drive, Lebanon, NH 03756. The Cremation Society of New Hampshire has been entrusted with arrangements.
