Fredrick "Mickel" Battermann, 83, of Waxhaw, NC, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, July 30, 2023, and joined his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ in eternity.
Mickel was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, and friend. He was born in Danville, VA, on October 11, 1939, to Hattie Beatrice Keen Battermann and Frederick Christian August Battermann, the youngest of nine children. He grew up loving baseball and was a member of Kentuck Baptist Church. He graduated from Dan River High School in 1958 and studied Drafting and Design at Danville Technical Institute, where he earned his Associates Degree in 1960. He went on to have a long and distinguished career of over 40 years as a Mechanical Designer where he was well-respected in his field. He proudly served his country from 1963 to 1965 as a member of the U.S. Army, and he remained a proud patriot all his life.
On July 31, 1965, he married his best friend and lifelong love, Larry Ann Hansford Battermann. They enjoyed a long, committed marriage of 58 years and were inseparable. They were blessed with three children who adored him, and later with three grandchildren, who affectionately referred to him as "Grampy." He will be sorely missed by his family and friends.
He was an active member of Siler Presbyterian Church in Wesley Chapel, NC for over 45 years, where he served as an elder on the Session multiple times, was part of the Men's Ministry, and developed many of his lifelong friendships. Faith was an integral part of his life which he reflected in the way he lived.
He was an avid outdoorsman, hunter, and fly fisherman. He enjoyed traveling out West in his travel trailer with his wife Larry Ann. He loved to spend time in the mountains and with his family on annual trips to the beach. He was a great cook, loved working at the annual men's BBQ at church, and was especially known for his biscuits and pancakes, which earned him the nickname "The Pancaker" by his grandchildren. In retirement he spent many hours in his workshop, making beautiful furniture and cabinetry.
Mickel is survived by his wife Larry Ann Hansford Battermann; his son "Kit" James Christopher Mickel Battermann (Wendy) of Sacramento, CA; his daughter Kelly Leigh Battermann Tuttle (Chad) of Waxhaw, NC; his daughter Kara Ann Battermann of Waxhaw, NC; and his grandchildren Aidan Garrett Tuttle, Macon "Mackey" Cole Tuttle, and Sophia Isabela Keen Tuttle of Waxhaw, NC.
