Fred McKinney passed away on Thursday, June 16, 2022, surrounded by family. He was 78 years old and lived a long and full life.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Judd Leon McKinney and Eva Walker McKinney and his sister, Holt McKinney Teague.
Fred was an alumni and dedicated member of the Board of Directors of Oak Ridge Military Academy. He was a decorated veteran of the Vietnam War.
Fred was well-known throughout Durham, Cumberland and New Hanover counties and around the state as a well-respected member in North Carolina Law Enforcement having a 30-year career in the State Bureau of Investigation, retiring as Special Agent in Charge. Upon his retirement in 1999, he was presented the Order of the Long Leaf Pine and appointed Honorary Attorney General.
His favorite place to visit was Charleston, South Carolina. He enjoyed sport car racing and regularly volunteered with the Sports Car Club of America races while building a network of cherished friendships. Mr. McKinney is survived by his brother-in-law, Forrest H. Teague; Niece, Lynn T. Ligon (Norwood), Nephews: Reverend Hank Teague (Paula), Kemp Leon Teague (Michelle) and Wade Teague (Deb) and seven great nieces & nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 3pm, Friday, June 24, 2022, at Andrews Valley Chapel, 4108 S. College Rd., Wilmington, NC 28412.
The family will receive visitors one hour prior, beginning at 2pm.
