Frederick J. Lombardo died on February 10, 2021 after a tough battle with cancer.
Fred was born May 15, 1947 in Buffalo, NY to Joseph R. Lombardo and the late Charlotte Konrad Lombardo. Fred leaves behind his beloved Father Joseph; sons Andrew and Nicolas Lombardo of Clifton, VA; Kathleen McDermott, life partner of 34 years; and his former wife, Suzanne Lombardo. Fred was a 'rock' for all of his family including his Siblings: Sister and Brother-in-Law, Virginia and Gerald Kazmierczak of Sugar Land, TX; Brother and Sister-in-Law Joseph S. Lombardo and Lynda Rosenthal of Clarence Center, NY; Brother and Sister-in-Law Michael and Jean Lombardo of Grand Lake Stream, ME; 7 nieces and nephews; and 2 grandnephews.
While attending Kenmore East High School, Fred wrestled at the varsity level and reached the State finals. He was in scouting and a member of Zeta Sigma Phi Fraternity. Fred received an Associate Degree in Civil Technology from Erie Community College and studied Civil Engineering at the State University of New York at Buffalo. He had a lifelong love of learning and taught himself a great deal about accounting, information technology, and photography.
Fred served briefly in the U.S. Army stationed at Fort Dix, NJ. After his military service he earned the moniker "Fearless Fred" in his early construction jobs.
Fred loved big challenges, at work and in life. For many years, his license plate read "CAN DO".
He joined the US Army Corps of Engineers as a civilian engineer in the Buffalo District Office. He worked on many projects including the dewatering of Niagara Falls. In 1983 Fred transferred to USACE Headquarters in Washington DC. His career evolved from engineering to Real Estate and Resource Management where he created and maintained several information systems and served as Project and Program Manager. While serving as Acting Chief for his Division he received a Special Service Award.
Retired from the Corps, Fred served as the CFO of family owned, Shoreline Camps of Grand Lakes Stream, ME and owned and ran a small, healthy food vending business.
Family was everything to Fred, we all considered him a rock that held us together. He taught his sons fishing: hosted numerous, huge Thanksgiving dinners; drove through snowstorms to get to his Sister's Christmas Eve dinners and organized family fishing expeditions at Shoreline Camps.
Fred loved the outdoors. He fished with his sons on the Niagara River, canoed with friends in Algonquin Park and in the Genesee River, rode in innumerable bicycle rides, crewed in amateur sailboat racing on the Seaquester in Chesapeake Bay, and rafted in white water on the Youghiogheny River. One accomplishment Fred was proud of was riding his bicycle from Seattle WA to Washington, DC as a part of the American Lung Association's 1998 "Big Ride".
Because of the pandemic, we're holding an on-line Celebration of Fred's life. There will be no reception or after events. Please contact Demaine Funeral Home in Fairfax, VA for information on the arrangements.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to the Capital Area Food Bank or to Capital Caring Halquist Center for Inpatient Care in Arlington, VA
