Fred Carroll Messer, born October 31, 1941, passed away in Atlanta, Georgia on October 28, 2021 after a long and hard-fought battle with pulmonary fibrosis. He was born in Sumrall, MS and graduated from the University of Southern Mississippi after serving in the United States Navy. He retired from Ingalls Shipbuilding after a 42-year career in engineering. Freddy loved fishing, reading, turning wooden bowls, and, most of all, spending time with his two granddaughters, Alex and Caroline. He is preceded in death by his parents, Clifford and Ludie Messer, and his brothers, Donald and Kenneth Messer, and sister Patsy Sanders. Freddy is survived by his daughter, Meredith Lackey, son-in-law, Travis Lackey, and his two beloved granddaughters, all of Atlanta, Georgia. He is also survived by his brother, David Messer, of Sumrall, MS. In lieu of a service, the family will hold a private celebration of his life, and his ashes will be scattered on Horn Island, where he spent so many days fishing with friends and family.
