Frances “Fran” Minot Skank, 85, of Ames, Iowa died Saturday, July 2, 2022 at Mary Greeley Medical Center, surrounded by family.
Friends may call from 4:00 until 6:00 P.M. on Tuesday, July 12, 2022 at the Adams Funeral Home, 502 Douglas Ave., Ames, Iowa. A private family burial will be in the Ames Municipal Cemetery.
Fran was born June 5, 1937 in Waterville, Maine to James Lawrence, Sr. and Velma Elizabeth (Briggs) Minot. She married Harold Dean Skank on August 28, 1965 at the Old South Church in Belgrade, Maine.
She grew up on the family dairy farm in Belgrade. Fran graduated from Gould Academy in Bethel, Maine with a degree in Home Economics. She later taught Home Economics at the Academy.
After marrying Harold, the two established a home in Ames where they raised three sons. Fran held a variety of jobs over the years including ice sculptor and watermelon carver at Gateway Center, owner of Bath on Main and Petticoat Place, and vendor at the Brass Armadillo Antique Mall in Ankeny.
Fran continued to reside in Ames until 2016 when she moved to Streamwood, Illinois, living with family there. In 2021, she returned to Ames.
Fran’s many interests included reading, cooking, and antiquing. She was a proud member of the Red Hat Mammas for many years. She loved polishing silver, eating sweets, “making trouble” with her best friend, collecting just about anything, and spending time with her beloved grandkids.
Fran adored animals, most particularly corgis and other dogs, elephants, and polar bears. She also loved seashells and rocks.
Fran is survived by her sons, George Lawrence (Janelle) Hall-Skank of Streamwood, Illinois, James Alma Skank (Julie) Minot of Madrid, and Nathan Evans Skank of Grimes; three grandchildren, Emmalie Grace Hall-Skank, Nicholas Evan Hall-Skank, and Benjamin Kyler Hall-Skank, all of Streamwood, Illinois; her sister Constance Elnora Lindquist of Woburn, Massachusetts; several nieces and nephews; and her best friend, Beverly Hall of Ames.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother James Lawrence, Jr., her sister Marion Elizabeth, and her husband, Harold.
