Frances Gene Monteith was born in Memphis, TN, February 2nd, 1929, to Wylie Eugene Horne and Bessie Roth Horne. Gene grew up in Shelby County and graduated from Bolton High School in 1947. After marrying Roy Donald Monteith in 1948, the couple moved to Brunswick, TN where they built their lifelong home together in 1951.
On March 3rd, 2021, Gene died peacefully in her home. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her sister Marjorie Tugwell, and brothers, Wylie Alvin Horne and Billy Roth Horne. She leaves behind two sons Roy Donald Monteith, Jr. and Steven Eugene Monteith, daughter Mary Ellen Monteith Starks (Jimmy), two granddaughters, Rachel and Rebecca Starks.
Gene was a true matriarch to the Brunswick community and to the Brunswick Cumberland Presbyterian Church. A devoted mother, grandmother, Sunday School teacher, church elder - she was a mentor and role model beloved by so many while never seeking the attention or praise in return. For 24 years, she served as clerk and Postmaster at Brunswick Post Office, retiring in 1992. With a passion for home crafts - from cooking, to sewing and quilting - these arts were not only a source of joy for herself, but also served as a tangible form of love to be shared with those around her.
A private service is being held for the family. A memorial service will be held for the public at a later date.
