Floyd Charles Billings passed away at his home in Kendalia, Texas, on August 28, 2020, with his beloved wife of 60 years, Charla Boyd Mitchell Billings, at his side. He was born in 1939 in Laredo, Texas, to Floyd Billings and Norma Brown Billings. Floyd was a life-long South Texas rancher. He learned this passion at his father's side on the family's ranch. The Billings Ranch near Bruni, Texas, was established by Floyd's grandfather and has been under single family ownership for over 100 years. Floyd and Charla married in Hebbronville, Texas, in 1960. Floyd's love of plants and the outdoors led the couple to Alpine, Texas, in 1964 where he earned a Master's in Botany from Sul Ross State University. He studied under Professor Barton H. Warnock, an American botanist and leading authority on vegetation of the Texas Trans-Pecos area. Under Dr. Warnock's direction, Floyd spent many hours walking the hills, collecting plant specimens and determining the scientific classification of each. Floyd was proud of his work that contributed to the many books written by Dr. Warnock. The family moved to Laredo, Texas, in 1974 where Floyd worked for an oil and gas company and then for the US Department of Agriculture as an inspector at the US-Mexican border bridge. Floyd left the USDA to join his brother, W.C. Billings, in management of the Billings Ranch. Floyd moved his family to Kendalia, Texas, in 1990 where he established the Curry Creek Ranch while co-managing the Billings Ranch. Floyd is survived by his wife, Charla, and four cherished children: Blair (Mandy) Billings, Gavin Billings Fellows, Floyd F. (Kristi) Billings, and Darren Billings who all reside in the Kendalia area and helped their mother care for Floyd as his health failed. He also leaves four beloved grandchildren, Rory and Taylor Fellows, and Lillian and Catherine Billings. One brother preceded him in death, J. Scott Billings. Surviving siblings are W.C. (Diann) Billings of Freer, Texas, Betty Billings Dinn of Corpus Christi, Texas, Mary Cecil Billings Walker of Freer, Texas, and Kella Billings Figueroa of Bandera, Texas.
