ORISKANY/UTICA - Mrs. Flora A. (Rizzo) Scialdo, formerly of Oriskany, passed away peacefully on Friday, October 21, 2022. At the time of her passing, she looked to the Lord and closed her eyes, with her loved ones by her side.
Born in Utica, Flora was the daughter of the late Antonio and Clementina (DiSiena) Rizzo. Raised and educated in Utica, she was a graduate of T. R. Proctor High School and attended M.V.C.C. It was on August 17, 1975 that she was wed to Joseph O. Scialdo. Their life together was a true blessing and they embraced the joys of their family. They had an incredible love and were gifted with a wonderful and fulfilled life. Joseph passed away on August 5, 2018.
In 1967 Flora proudly accepted the position of secretary to the principals of Oriskany Central Schools; she had a passion and admiration for her coworkers and was a motherly figure to the kids. Flora retired in 1993. She rejoined the school system in 1995 and worked with students which was so rewarding because of the love, respect, and joy she received from them. Flora will be best remembered for her smile, her genuine ways, her graceful mannerisms and embraces, and her true love for her family and "students."
Flora is survived by her devoted daughter and son-in-law, Terese "Terri" and James "Jim" Sojda; her son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Susan Fiore; and her grandchildren who were her world, James "Jimmy" and Ani Sojda, Melissa and Robert McKeon, Jonathan and Jessica Fiore, and Matthew Fiore. She lived to see her great-grandchildren who were her most precious jewels, Savarrah, and Parker "P.J." Sojda; and twins, Emily, and Patrick McKeon. She is additionally survived by several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. Flora was blessed with many special relationships, especially with Marie Panetta, and the late Charles and Connie Gaetano. She was predeceased by her sisters and brothers-in-law, Mary and Jack Matteo, Helen and Salvatore Bianco, and Katherine and Patsy Brillante; and her brother and sister-in-law, Tullio and Ruth Rizzo.
Flora's family extends their sincerest gratitude to the incredible staff of the Queen Household at the Masonic Care Community of NY, who were amazing in the care they shared with Flora, which was so comforting to her family. They truly loved her, cared, and watched over her with such compassion. Thanks also to Rev. Arthur Krawczenko and the staff of Sacred Heart and St. Mary's Church, especially Ann Kroll, who always kept Flora in prayer and gently remembered her with such reverence.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend Flora's Memorial Mass of Christian Burial and Celebration of Life which will be held on Saturday morning, October 29, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart and St. Mary's Church, 201 Main St., New York Mills. There will be an opportunity to greet the family at the conclusion of Mass. In lieu of floral offerings, memorial donations in Flora's honor may be made to Sacred Heart and Saint Mary's Church; envelopes will be available at the service.
