WEINER, Eugene "Gene" L, 90, passed away on August 1, 2022, at his home in Indian Shores. He was born on August 11, 1931, in New York to Eugene J Weiner and Doreen Hughes, who preceded him in death. He is survived by his loving wife, soul mate, and best friend of over 50 years, Mary Lou Weiner; his four children Kathleen "Kathi" Fox, San Diego, Jacqueline "Jackie" Hammeleff (Bent) Evanston Ill, Eugene "Chip" Weiner (Cathi), Tampa, and Dawn Tipple, Plant City; his three grandchildren Lauren Fox, Kevin Fox, and Anna Lisa Hammeleff, and his faithful dog and companion Yankee "Doodles" Dandy. After his mother's death when he was 5, he lived in many parts of the United States with various relatives and attended 14 secondary schools, and graduated from high school in Chicago and from University of Illinois College of Business in 1953, following which he served as a Communications and Training Officer in the U.S. Air Force until the end of the Korean War. Following his release from the Air force, he began his career in advertising in Greenville, South Carolina, producing ads for print and television commercials in the dawn of color TV. In 1965 he moved his family to Tampa, Florida to join the family business at Paradise Fruit Company in Plant City, where he worked for over 50 years as COO and CFO. In 2000, while maintaining a small residence in Tampa, he and his wife moved to his principal home in Indian Shores in order to fulfill their dream of living on the beach. He retired in 2002 but remained a director and vice president in corporate development. Gene was an avid golfer and a member of Palma Ceia Country Club, Tampa Club, and St Petersburg Yacht Club. He was also an experienced boater and loved sailing, motor boating, and being on the water. He spent time giving back to the community as a Guardian Ad Litem for Hillsborough County and as a volunteer at Morton Plant Hospital.
Gene was a charter member and Knight in the Krewe of Sant' Yago. He was a dedicated USF Bulls fan, was instrumental in establishing a company-endowed scholarship in the College of Business, and was a member of the Bulls club since 1988. A celebration of life is planned for a later date. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Children's Home of Tampa, The Hillsborough County Guardians Ad Litem program, or Metropolitan Ministries.
