Eugene B. Wunderlich. 83, passed away on April 11, 2023 in Glens Falls Hospital after battling several ailments over the past few months.
Gene, or "Butch", as many people called him, was born in Latham, NY to Anna Mae and Joseph Wunderlich and spent his younger years working on the family farm. Raising chickens, milking cows, and bailing hay were some of the chores Gene could be seen in helping his parents run the family farm.
Gene spent his grade school years in a one room school house in Latham and at St Patrick's School in Watervliet. He then attended Keveny Academy in Cohoes for high school.
Gene was a man of many skills, and post high school, he immediately joined the work force. After a few years, he developed a strong desire to serve our country to protect our waters by serving in the U.S. Coast Guard.
When he returned from the service, he worked for the North Colonie School District as a bus driver. Driven by his desire to help family, he helped start Wunderlich Sand and Gravel. Here, Gene spent the next 55 years as a heavy equipment operator.
Gene was fiercely loyal to his family and spent his entire life helping them wherever or however he could. He enjoyed spending time with them, often by going out and getting ice cream. He loved vacationing in Cape Cod and could spend all day at the beach. He loved to collect toy tractors and trains, he loved to garden (his tomatoes were the best) and he could be seen with friends at events of the antique car club.
Gene was loved by many people, but none more than his family. He is survived by his immediate family of Kathleen, his wife of 48 years, his son Kurt Wunderlich (Julia) of Stamford, CT, daughter Noreen Auringer (Dave) of Latham, 5 grandchildren, Xavier, Andrew, Lucas, Lucy, and Eve. Gene is also survived by his brother, John, and many nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be Monday at 10 am from the Bowen & Parker Bros. Funeral Home, 97 Old Loudon Road, Latham and at 10:30 am at St. Ambrose Church in Latham where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Rev. John F. Tallman. Interment will be in the Saratoga National Cemetery. Relatives and friends are invited and may call at the funeral home on Sunday from 2-5 pm.
The family would like to thank the staff of the Glens Falls Hospital for their extremely compassionate care of Gene in his final moments. In lieu of flowers, we ask for donations to be made to the hospital (https://www.glensfallshospital.org/about/foundation/give-glens-falls-hospital/) or to Saint Ambrose School (now, Catholic Central School https://catholiccentralschool.org).
