Our much-loved family member, Eugene Marshall Ackert, glided softly into his next dimension on August 1, 2021, in Winston-Salem, NC. Gene was born to the late Mary Catherine Pierce and Marshall Stockman Ackert in Owosso, Michigan on December 16, 1934.
After completing high school in Owosso, Gene enlisted in the Navy for a tour of duty, before returning to Michigan and attending Western Michigan University. He worked for many years and retired from the Genesee County Probation Dept.
Throughout his life, Gene enjoyed the great outdoors. From a young age he loved fishing in the many lakes around Michigan. He was an avid sailor, making his way from Michigan down the Mississippi River and on to the Florida Keys. He was "a legend in his own time" on the golf course, as his golfing buddies often said, and he was always searching for his next hole in one! His love of travel took him far and wide all around the States.
He was a kind, gentle and oh so handsome man who deeply cared for his family as they did for him. The family gatherings filled with fun, laughter, and unforgettable memories will stay forever in our hearts.
Gene is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 32 years, Suzanne Bowen Ackert, of the home; his son Scot Ackert and wife Leanne of Charlevoix, Mi; his daughter Sheryl Huffman and husband Greg of Daphne, Alabama; stepdaughters Cyndi McLean and husband Bill, of Charleston, SC; Sharon "Hey" Sturkie and husband Carter, of Winston-Salem, NC; nine grand-children and five great-grandsons. He is also survived by many cousins, nieces, and nephews, and his former wife, Patricia Oliver Swanson, of Daphne, Alabama.
The family will hold a private gathering at a later date on St. Mary's River, near DeTour Village, Michigan. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Charlevoix Historical Society, P.O. Box 525, Charlevoix, Mi 49720.
