Ethel (Kocsis) Hess, 93, passed away in the early morning on Saturday, March 10, at Sprenger Health Care of Mishawaka. Born Feb. 2, 1925 in Middletown, Ohio, Ethel met husband Bob at Armco Steel in Middletown Ohio. They married March 3, 1945. The family moved to South Bend in 1960.
Ethel was an active member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, where she superintended the hooking of eight creedal banners for the Fellowship Hall as well as a denominational seal later donated to the Louisville Theological Seminary. For the church's 100th anniversary, she resumed her leadership role, designing and supervising the construction of the anniversary banner picturing the history of the church.
She was an active participant and valued mentor to several groups of rug hookers and quilters. Ethel also served the St. Joseph County Public Library, first as a part-time member of the Circulation staff, then as a volunteer directly and through the Friends of the Library.
Ethel is predeceased by parents Albert and Julia Kocsis, sister Julia Lato, and brother Albert Kocsis; she is survived by sisters Barbara (Bill) Webster and Jeanne Kocis, and by sons Randall (Vickie), Thomas (Betty Jane), and David; daughter Ilona (Thomas) Coffey; four grandchildren, and two great grandchildren.
Memorial services celebrating Ethel's life will be held at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, June 9th in the Welsheimer Family Funeral Home, 521 N. William St. Cremation has taken place and her cremains will be inurned with Bob's at Woodside Cemetery in Middletown.
