Old Lyme - Ethel Gordon Chatkin of Old Lyme, passed away July 22, 2022, at the age of 93. Ethel was born and raised in Minot, N.D., and moved to New England, subsequent to her attending Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. She is survived by her two children, Larry (Cheryl) of Des Moines, and Marcia Siegel of Carlsbad, Calif.; three sisters, Doris of St. Louis, Janet of Los Angeles, and Ruth of Palm Desert, Calif.; and numerous nieces and nephews, all of the Gordon family. Ethel was a musician, beginning in grade school with violin lessons from Arturo Petrucci of Italy, who also taught an eminent Julliard professor Sally Thomas, also originally of Minot. Ethel played the E-flat clarinet in the Minot High School marching band. Her interest and excellence in music carried over to singing in the Temple Emanu-el Synagogue under the direction of Cantor Sherry Barnes. Ethel visited a number of retirement homes where she led sing-a-longs. Earlier, she started a nursery school for the Jewish Community Center in Pittsfield, Mass.The family would like to pay tribute to Rabbi Marc Eckstrom and Dr. David Walker, Michele Snitkin and Martha Shoemaker for their support during Ethel's struggle for healing.Ethel's funeral service will take place at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, July 24, at Temple Emanu-El, 29 Dayton Road, Waterford. Interment will follow in Hebrew Benevolent Cemetery # 3, 62 Middle Road, Preston.
