Esther Peterson Fontaine, 92, cherished wife, mother, grandmother, passed away peacefully after a brief period of failing health on February 19th, 2021 at Havenwood in Concord, NH.
Born in Concord in 1928, Esther grew up in West Concord graduating from Concord High School in 1946. She was employed by Blue Cross Blue Shield. Married in 1948 to Philip Fontaine, she and Phil raised their five children in Penacook. During the years that she was a stay at home Mom, she used her sewing skills making uniforms for Penacook High School , costumes and vestments for Immaculate Conception Church and doing alterations for Spearman's Store. Once all the children were in school she went to work for the Merrimack Valley school lunch program and later went on to work for Concord Group Insurance as a Life and Disability Claims Administrator until her retirement. After Phil's passing she moved to Heritage Heights where she made many friends.
Esther was a clever, creative person. She will be remembered for her sweet smile, ready laugh and her gentle ways. She always made holidays and birthdays very special with her wonderful cooking and special gifts. Gardening, cooking, painting, golfing, bowling, swimming and dancing were some of the hobbies she enjoyed.
She is predeceased by Philip Fontaine, her loving husband of sixty-two years, her parents Thure and Hildur Peterson, siblings Warren and Ellen Peterson, Martha Costello, Anna Sutton, and Margaret Dresser. She is greatly missed by her five children; Karen Watson; Peter Fontaine, his wife Susan; Mark Fontaine and his wife Patricia; Mary Bronnenberg and her husband Jack; and Patti Thibeault; 13 grandchildren and their spouses, 21 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild and many nieces and nephews.
Our many thanks to the staff of Havenwood for their kindness and care shown to Esther in her final days.
Due to Covid, calling hours will be limited to close family on February 27th at 11:30. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at Immaculate Conception Church at 1:00 P.M. ,family and friends are welcome to attend, social distancing will be observed and masks required. An outdoor Celebration of Life will be held in late spring following burial at Maple Grove Cemetery.
