Esther Engstrom, a longtime resident of Skagit Valley, passed away August 10, 2024 at the age of 88 in Mount Vernon, Washington.
She was born March 10, 1936, in Hershey, Nebraska to Reinert and Amanda Hoagland. In her youth she showed champion 4H steers at the Nebraska State Fairs. She later became the 4H leader of the Baker Heights 4H club.
She was married to Robert Engstrom on August 12, 1956 in Maria's Lutheran Church in Hershey, NE. She married into the farming life and took on many tasks and raised her children in farming as well. She was a longtime member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Samish Valley Grange, and Skagit Dairy Women. She had been a Mount Vernon resident for 68 years. Esther enjoyed long camping trips to Alaska, Texas, and Nebraska, as well as weekends at their Lake Tyee lot.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Engstrom; son, John Engstrom; sisters, Agnes Gartrell and Hedy Anderson; brother, Meg Haugland; and her parents, Amanda and Reinert Haugland.
She is survived by her daughter, Sharon (Mike) Schmidt of Mount Vernon, WA; grandson, Jack Schmidt of Sedro Woolley, WA; granddaughter-in-law, Rosie Schmidt of Port Orchard, WA; granddaughter Heidi Rober of Manitou Beach, Michigan; great-grandsons, James and Robert Schmidt of Port Orchard, WA; and Dax Rober of Manitou Beach, MI.
There will be a Funeral Service for Esther at 11:00 AM, Friday, August 16, 2024 in Kern Funeral Home's Chapel, 1122 S Third St, Mount Vernon, WA. There will be a Graveside Service following at Mount Vernon Cemetery, 1200 E Fir St., Mount Vernon, WA. The family invites the public to attend a Reception following the graveside ceremony back at Kern Funeral Home at 1:15 PM.
