Erna Emma Jacoby, nee Besier, of Stonewall passed away on Saturday, October 29th at the age of 98.
Erna was born on December 29th,1923 in Gillespie County, Texas to George and Dora Herbort Besier. After meeting at a dance, she married Roy E. Jacoby on January 28th,1942 in the St. Mary's Catholic Church in Fredericksburg, Texas. They were married for 67 years and lived in the Nebgen community on the Jacoby homestead where they farmed and ranched while raising their eleven children.
Erna was very active in the community. She belonged to many dance clubs in the area because she loved to go dancing with her husband. She was an emeritus member of the Extension Education Association (EEA) and a founding member of the St. Rose Society. She was a charter member of the Nebgen Community Club and could be found playing 42 there as well as with the Post Oak and Rheingold clubs.
Skilled in many home economic skills, she sewed many garments of clothing. Her embroidery work was stunning; she embroidered pillows, pillow cases and "Omie" into a granddaughter's wedding dress. She could be found often in her chair in the living room watching the news and nightly game shows while crocheting afghans. Many of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren have a blanket she created for them.
Erna had a green thumb and grew a wide variety of vegetables in her garden. She loved to keep the front porch of the house and flower beds filled with potted plants, succulents, and numerous blooming beauties. She tended to the front yard orchard filled with pecan, peach, pear, apricot and fig trees and loved to can the fruits from each. In addition to her love for canning, she was an excellent cook and was known to feed anyone working or visiting the ranch daily. Favorites that family and friends still talk about include cobblers, bread, butter, dove stew, a pot of squirrel, and her fried chicken on Sundays. You can find many of her recipes in cookbooks throughout the county.
