Emogene (Gene) Loretta VanScyoc (96) enjoyed people. She liked to have a smile on her face and figured it was better to laugh than to cry. She was dedicated to her family, church, and community. She was married to Lotus VanScyoc on September 1, 1942.
Gene was born in Rushville and lived in New Palestine until 1998, when she moved to Springfield, IL to be closer to her grandchildren. She volunteered with many organizations, including the Hancock County Extension Homemakers, the Mental Health Association, Senior Services, and the Carrollton United Methodist Church. In Springfield, she continued volunteering with the Home Extension and the Laurel United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband Lotus P. VanScyoc, and daughter Linda J. VanScyoc, her parents Thelma L Hoard and Ozzo E. Hoard, and sister Ellen Jane Tarplee.
Gene is survived by her daughters Wilma VanScyoc (spouse, Mitchell Roth) and Beverly Corey (spouse, Clint), her grandchildren Nathaniel Roth (spouse, Natalie) and Benjamin Roth, and her niece and nephews, Connie, Leo and James Michael Tarplee.

The family is being served by the Freeman Family Funeral Homes in Shelbyville. Burial at Hanover Cemetery in Morristown. No services will be held at this time.
