Ruth Embelyne "Cookie" Bye, born April 7, 1921, passed away April 7, 2021, her hundredth birthday.
She was daughter to Ruth and Emmitt Cook of Dallas. She graduated from Adamson High School in 1939, and married Milton Bye, her husband of 68 years.
She loved playing cards and dominoes or any game that included a social setting. Always up for a challenge, Cookie was willing to take on any adventure or volunteer for any need, especially providing homecooked food for others.
She began working at the Dallas Apparel Mart when it opened in 1964 where she was responsible for leasing all the temporary showrooms and producing the buyer's guide for shows. At her retirement she was given entry to the apparel mart at any time.
She and Milton spent many years playing golf at Dallas' Riverlake Country Club which later became Sleepy Hollow. During the 60's Cookie headed up the junior golf association where Tom Kite became a student of the game and later a longtime professional on the PGA Tour. She was also the women's golf champion and president of the Women's Golf Association. She was a member of Kessler Park Methodist Church.
Cookie was preceded in death by her husband and by a grandson, Clay Herdman. She is survived by two daughters, Barbara Stimel and husband Steve of Sebastopol, CA and Janus Buss and husband Ted of Wichita Falls, TX; a granddaughter, Crista Nelson and husband Ron of Petaluma, CA; a grandson, Dr. Chase Herdman and wife Angie of Fort Worth; grandson Brad Buss and wife Mitzie of Haslet; granddaughter Julie Addison of Wichita Falls and seven great grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Doris Avrea of Dallas.
