Elsie (Mae) Wheeler McTee was born on July 9, 1933, and died at the age of 88 on November2, 2021. She was the first-born of Charles Dewey and Mae Marie (Moses) Wheeler. She was born in San Antonio, Texas at Santa Rosa Hospital. She grew up in Tilden, where she established lifelong friendships with classmates and cousins. Her family moved to Austin after the death of her father, where she finished High School. She then attended the University of Texas at Austin where she was an active member of Delta Zeta Sorority and earned a Bachelor of Journalism Degree. In 1952, during her junior year she met the love of her life and married Cliff McTee. They had their first child in 1959 and she began her lifelong career of volunteering.
While the family lived in Corpus Christi, Elsie was involved in the PTA while her three children were in school and was the past president of the Corpus Christi Geological Auxiliary, the Petrol Club, and the Area Council for the Deaf. Elsie remained active as an alumnus of Delta Zeta sorority and volunteered as a Consumer Credit Counselor. After moving to San Antonio, Elsie served as president of Delta Zeta Foundation and Assistance League of San Antonio. She was a member of Alamo Heights United Methodist Church and had many friends in the Open-door Sunday school class. She was also a very active member of the Woman's Club of San Antonio and belonged to several bridge groups.
Elsie loved playing bridge, working jigsaw and crossword puzzles, and particularly enjoyed spending time with her immediate family and many cousins, especially at the family ranch in McMullen County. She was an avid sports fan and loved watching the Texas Longhorns, the San Antonio Spurs and the Houston Astros.
Elsie is preceded in death by her parents, husband Cliff, of 63 years and her sister, Mary Ann Wheeler. She is survived by her son, Clifford R. McTee III (Ford) and his wife, Barbara of Austin; her daughter, Shelly McTee, and her husband, Jay Miller, of Phoenix, Arizona; and her son Charles Dewey McTee and his wife Kimberley, of San Antonio. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Taylor Marie Parsons and husband Rob of Austin, Clifford R. McTee IV (Cliff) and his wife Caitlin of Austin: Blake Daniel McTee of Austin, and Michaela Elizabeth McTee of San Antonio. In addition, she is survived by her pride and joy and much adored great-grandchildren, Zella Marie and Wheeler Robert Parsons of Austin.
On November 10, 2021, at 10 am, a graveside service will be held at Hilltop Cemetery, Tilden, followed at 3 pm by a memorial service at Alamo Heights First United Church, 825 E. Basse, San Antonio.
