Help us celebrate Elmer! Please share your stories and photos, and invite others who remember Elmer.
Elmer Howard Whisenant, Sr. died suddenly of a heart-attack at his home in Matagorda Texas on the morning of November 20, 2020. He was born May 28, 1939 in Mansfield, Texas to the late Marvin Whisenant, Sr., and Clorie Lestie Logan.
Before retiring in Matagorda, Elmer was a lifelong resident of the Mansfield/Rendon area, where he built the house that he and his wife shared to the extent of unearthing and hauling the very rock he used. Elmer was a brilliant craftsman and also possessed exceptional ingenuity for the workings of motors and machines. Elmer had a true passion for fishing and took great pride in his riverfront property in Matagorda where he hand crafted the perfect floating dock and cabin; his "home away from home" as he always called it. Elmer dedicated his life to caring for his wife, children, and grandchildren through his unconditional love and kind words of support. He helped many a friend through trials, and didn't turn his back on a stranger. Elmer is reunited in heaven with his high school sweetheart and wife of 61 years, Martha Ann Smith.
Elmer leaves behind his son, Elmer Howard Jr. and daughter, Darla. He will also be missed by his four grand-daughters Janey, Kara, Heidi and Keli, and his grandson Brad, and by his sixteen great-grandchildren, along with multiple nieces, nephews and friends. Elmer is survived by his sisters Opal and Betty, S-I-L, Nancy Ryan and husband, Buddy, his B-I-L Clyde Smith and wife Becky, S-I-L and partner in grief, Kay Whisenant, and his canine companion, Mindy.
Elmer's funeral service will be held at 2 pm, Friday 11-27-20 at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home, 2313 Ave I in Bay City, Texas followed by a graveside tribute and burial in the historic Matagorda Cemetery. Pallbearers are Ricky Thornton, Randy Thornton, Robbie Robbins, Mitch Sauls, Michael Kent and Brad Ingram.
Please lift up prayers for the Whisenant family and friends.
