Elmer Adkins, 95, of Middletown, MD departed this life on July 23, 2024, at Maryland Manor Assisted Living in Jefferson, MD. Elmer was born on November 5, 1928 and raised in Middletown, MD. He was the son of the late Harry E. and Mary E. (Routzahn) Adkins. Elmer is the sole survivor of his family; he is preceded in death by his sister Elsie (Adkins) Miller and his three brothers Glenn, Lee and Roy Adkins.
Elmer's beloved wife Betty L. (Churchey) Adkins passed in September 2019 after 71 years of marriage.
Surviving is his only daughter, Sheila K. (Adkins) Delauter and son in law Dale F. Delauter, grandchildren Gwyn Delauter, Keith and Trina Delauter, and Dana Ammons; his great grandchildren Zachary (Lauren) Haines, Cole (Courtney) Haines, Jessica (John) Remsberg, Emily Delauter, Kirstin (Jordan) Dixon, Layne and Chelsea Masser, Sierra and Sam Ammons, great great grandchildren Coen and Jaycee Haines, Ryder Haines, Archer Remsberg, Kailee and Evelyn Dixon, and Bailey and Garrett Masser, as well as cousins, nephews, and sister-in-laws.
Elmer graduated from Middletown High School in the class of 1945. He was the son of a farmer and chose to pursue his career as a carpenter and to share his God given talents to those who gave to him and give back to those who helped him. His mission was to better the lives of others including family and friends. He was a member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America, Local Union Member 132. He worked at various jobsites and worked for The Washington Woodworking Corp., Inc., Washington DC. Elmer was awarded Exceptional Craftsmanship for a Private Residence, Washington, DC. This award came from the Washington Building Congress.
Elmer enjoyed sharing his talent with family, friends, and neighbors who were in need.
Elmer was an active church member of The Grossnickle Church of the Brethren. He completed The Discipleship Class Bible Class given by retired Pastor Ron Ellis. In his downtime, Elmer liked to follow Sports and NASCAR races. In his younger days he played softball and bowled.
He enjoyed the challenge of putting together large puzzles. Most of all, Elmer shared his love with family, friends, and his faith family at The Grossnickle Church of the Brethren.
A Viewing will be held at 10:00 am and Funeral Services will begin at 11:00 am on Thursday, August 8, 2024 at Grossnickle Church of the Brethren, 11301 Meeting House Road, Myersville. A meal will be served immediately following the service. Officiating Pastor Sandi Rogers and Co-officiating Deacon Fred Rudman to preside. Interment for family and friends to meet will be held at Mountain View Cemetery, 299 East Main Street, Sharpsburg, MD 21782 at 2:30 pm.
Pallbearers will be Keith Delauter, John Remsberg, Zack Haines, Cole Haines, Layne Masser and Jordan Dixon.
