Ellis N. Kackley was born on October 16, 1941 in Soda Springs, ID and died on July 8, 2022. He attended grade school in Townsend, MT and Boise, graduating from Boise High School.
While growing up Ellis spent summers on the Kackley Ranch located on Williamsburg, ID. Summers were great fun riding horses, hiking in the mountains, fishing and getting to know and love all the wild critters. Neighbor, Les Crawford, taught Ellis about ranch life including horses, how to herd and care for cattle and how to build and fix fences. Later he worked summers for Dan Morgan and Bus Roy on Grays Lake stacking hay bales.
After high school Ellis worked for a year on the S S Colina, A Mobile Oil Co tanker sailing the west coast. He attended Whittier College and then earned a degree from Boise State University with a major in accounting and went on to earn a Masters Degree in finance from the University of Chicago. He worked for large accounting firms and banks in New York, later moving to San Francisco to work for the Bank of California,
Having had enough of big business Ellis decided to live off his investments and travel the world. He bought a backpack and spent nearly 2 years traveling down the west coast of South America and back up the east coast. He walked and hitched rides calling it 'traveling on the cheap', camping out or renting rooms that often included other four legged occupants. His South America experience led to his traveling on the cheap to the Holy Lands, Europe and Asia including a hike to the 17,000 foot level of MT. Everest.
When he 'retired' from traveling he lived in Boise during the winter. Spending summers at the ranch was his great passion and renewed his energy.
Preceded in death by his father and mother Evan M. Kackley, MD and Lois L. Kackley, RN and sister-in-law Yvonne Chacon Kackley. Ellis is survived by his companion Diane Beaufait, brother Alvin and cousins Edward Ulmer, John Ulmer, Diana Krieger and Mary Beth Murphy.
