Ellen Elizabeth Tracy-Scannell, 66, passed away on Thursday, May 19, 2022, in Manchester, NH, surrounded by her loving family. Born on March 16, 1956, in Arlington, Virginia, she is the daughter of Dr. Charles and Sara (York) Tracy. Ellen was raised in Belmont, MA, along with brothers and sisters Cathleen, Charles, Sara, Robert, and Ann.
Ellen attended Fairfield College and Boston College, where she graduated with a Master's Degree in English Literature. She taught at several New England colleges over her career. Most recently, Ellen taught English as a second language with the Sisters of Mercy in Manchester. She highly valued education and never stopped learning throughout her life.
Ellen always had a can of her favorite beverage, Coca-Cola, close at hand. She was an avid reader and enjoyed painting. She loved spending time at the beach and relished her trips to Italy and Ireland over the years. But above all, her family and her faith were the touchstones of her life. Ellen was happiest when spending time with her family, especially doting on her many grandchildren. She was particularly inspired by the Jesuit notion of "men and women for others", and embodied this value throughout her life and her work.
Ellen is preceded in death by her parents, Dr. Charles and Sara Tracy, and husband, Joseph Scannell.
Ellen is survived by her husband, Martin Greeley; daughter Alexandra Gantley (Micah Perry) of Austin, TX; son Walter Gantley (Sarah) of Wethersfield, CT; grandchildren Madeline, Patrick, and Ezekiel; stepdaughters Dawn, Jessica, and Rachel of St. Croix and Maine and their children. She is also survived by her aunts Christine Coppola, Monica Rankin, and Lizzy Greene, and many cousins.
Calling hours will be held on Tuesday May 24 from 5pm to 8pm. A funeral mass will be held on
Wednesday May 25 at 10am at St. Raphael's Church in Manchester, NH. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Sisters of Mercy.
