Ellen was born on July 27, 1944, in Henderson, NC to John Landon Bennett and Beuna Matthews Bennett. She graduated as Valedictorian of her class from Dabney High School and began her career at Citizens bank in Henderson. In 1965 she met what turned out to be her sweetheart for 58 years, Dennis Perry Hughes. They married in 1966 and moved to Raleigh where she began work for First Citizens Bank. She worked there until her first child Holly was born three years later. She then took a break from work to raise her family. Two years after Holly was born, her son Clay was born. As her children grew, she tirelessly drove to endless soccer, baseball, softball, volleyball, tennis, gymnastics, and basketball matches, games and tournaments. She was at EVERY game. She was their biggest fan. She loved sports and supported her children in everything that they participated in. She returned to First Citizens Bank part-time after her children grew up and worked for many years helping her customers. She had a mind like a calculator, so the bank was perfect for her! After her retirement from the bank, Dennis and Ellen traveled for many years with their wonderful friends at the Clayton Travel Club. They made so many memories together and saw so many wonderful places. Ellen loved her church family and attended until her health prevented her from going. She loved her family, and we thank GOD that we were lucky enough to be with her when she went to her eternal home in Heaven.
Ellen is survived by her husband, Dennis Hughes, daughter Holly Hughes Lambert (and husband Tim Lambert), son Clay Hughes (and wife Heather Hughes) and grandson Parker Hughes. She leaves behind her nephews Tommy Bennett and Ronald Bennett (with wife Cindy) and their children.
