Ella Ferne Jones was a beloved mother, grandmother, wife, sister, and friend. She left peacefully on May 5 surrounded by loved ones at the age of 95.
Born to L.H. and Diana Trotter on December 2, 1925 in Lockney, Texas. Married to Chester Jones of Kress and McLean for 57 years. Sister of Rev. Clifford Trotter (deceased) of Dumas and Hereford, Leslie Trotter (deceased) of Dumas and Plainview, and Mary Bloys James (living) of Plainview. Mother of Candace Watson of Plainview, Jim Watson (married to Sherry) of Amarillo, and Connie Andrus (married to Marlin) of Kress. She was "Ferne" to most, but "Butch" to her late husband, "Sister" to her mother, and "Mommom" to her grandchildren; she will be remembered affectionately and missed deeply.
She had six grandchildren, Connie Brown, Kathlene Brown, Dedra Davis, Danna Hess, Cristy Bennett and Craig Andrus; eight great grandchildren, Emery Andrus, Elisa Silva, Ethan Andrus, Tristan Davis, Ty Hess, Shay Hess, Haylee Bennett and Brandee Bennett; and by two beautiful little great great grandchildren, Aidee and Demaras Silva.
She enjoyed reading widely?everything from Shakespeare and Don Quixote to romance novels and People magazine. Ferne was masterfully sharp with complex word puzzles and enjoyed card games?Bridge with friends and Spades with family. Ferne created intricate needlework with beautifully graceful hands which were passed on to the most fortunate of her progeny. She ate meals very slowly and elegantly from small salad plates only.
She traveled many times with her sister Mary and all six of their children to Red River and other parts of northern New Mexico. She would fry chicken and make deviled eggs before leaving, cook eggs and bacon and toast in the cabin and have weenie roasts in the mountains and, if money wasn't tight, eat out once or twice. These trips taught her family that you don't have to be rich to enjoy a vacation.
She loved to tell stories of "playing church" with her older brother. She would be the choir and the congregation and Clifford would be the preacher. She would also tell about her brother Leslie putting her on one knee and her sister Mary on the other knee while they sang and played the piano.
Her life will be celebrated at a graveside service on Friday, May 7th at 10:00 a.m. at Kress Cemetery. The service will be officiated by Dr. Kim Hays. Bartley Funeral Home in Plainview is in charge of arrangements.
