Elizabeth (Betty) Wright, age 90, passed gently with loving support at her home after a lengthy illness on January 29, 2022.
Betty was born in Hartford, CT in 1931 and became the chosen daughter of Edna (Fenton) and Henry Sweeney of East Hartford, CT. She attended East Hartford High School where she enjoyed team sports and industrial arts. She married Kenneth Wright in 1951 and they would remain together for 59 years until his passing. They started a family and moved from the Sweeney's family cottage on Lake Terramugguss in Marlborough to Enfield, CT where Ken and Betty started a plumbing and heating business. They returned to and renovated the lake-side home in Marlborough and lived there from 1961-1979.
Betty and Ken purchased a homestead in Sharon, VT and moved there in 1979. Two of their children built their own homes on the land. This family compound was the hub of family gatherings with frequent visits from their eldest daughter and husband. The closeness of family allowed for mutual support - for them to help care for their grandchildren in the early years and, later in life, to be cared for when their own health failed. Betty cared for Ken after his stroke in 1999 until his death in 2010 with the help of their family. Similarly, Betty's family came to her aid when she became ill.
Betty was devoted to friends and family and enjoyed catching up over coffee at the kitchen table. She was a wonderful listener, always encouraging and proud of loved ones' accomplishments. Betty was predeceased by close friends Gene and Charles Locke, Diane Lingner, Betty Weir, and Claire Ouellette. She found comfort from being an avid reader and animal lover. She gave many rescued dogs and cats a forever home and enjoyed horses and horseback riding.
Betty is survived by her three children: Elizabeth Jane (Larry) Stachowiak of Lynn, MA, Kenneth (Nancy) Wright and Deborah (Jack) Jones of Sharon, granddaughters: Megan (Ben) O'Brien of Randolph, Kelin (Jason) Welborn of Cape Elizabeth, ME, and great-grandchildren: Amelia, Riley, and Quinn. She is also survived by her cousin Beverly Emmons, East Granby, CT who was like a sister to Betty, as well as several other dear cousins, nieces, and nephews. Her family will deeply miss her love, humor, and companionship.
Due to the risks related to the Covid-19 virus, her family will not be having a gathering at this time. Her children ask those wishing to make a donation in her honor to consider the Upper Valley Humane Society https://uvhs.org or the Gifford Adult Day Program Activity Fund https://giffordhealthcare.org/donate/. The family extends special thanks to the staff of the Gifford Adult Day Program in Bethel, VT for their extraordinary care and support for Betty in her final months. Arrangements are being made by Day Funeral Home in Randolph. Online condolences may be left at www.dayfunerals.com
