Elizabeth Tipton Webb, affectionately known as "Libby", died on September 22, 2022, at her home in Townsend. She was born to Clyde H. and Flossie Tipton on April 14, 1928. She graduated from Townsend High School in 1946 and from the University of Tennessee in 1950, majoring in Home Economics and Science. Libby taught Home Economics and Chemistry at Townsend High School and Home Economics at Alcoa High School.
She married John Byrd Webb in 1948. They lived in Townsend, Chicago, Nashville and Maryville before returning to their home on the river in beloved Townsend in 1970, where he served as Mayor for many years. They loved to travel and went to many special places in Florida, Niagara Falls, Hilton Head, Fripp Island, St Johns, Hawaii, St. Simon's, Sanibel Island, Peaks of Otter and Alaska.
Their marriage was blessed with three sons. She is survived by two sons: Wayne (Catherine) of Fripp Island, SC, and Gary (Tiffany) of Seymour, Tennessee. In addition, she is survived by her five grandchildren: Whitney Webb, Michael and Katie Webb, and Alex and Grant Webb. She is survived by sister Catherine Daughtery of Valdosta, GA, sister-in-law, Pat Tipton of Townsend, sister-friend Nancy Godfrey of Townsend, Misha Webb of Memphis, many nieces and nephews, and special care givers.
She is preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, John Byrd Webb, her son John Byrd Webb, Jr, sister and brother-in-law Anna Jean and Don Webb, brother and sister-in-law Clyde Ray and Margie Tipton, brother and sister-in-law William E. (Billy) and Grace Tipton and a brother, Paul Tipton.
She was a member of The Tuckaleechee United Methodist Church (and former Member of Pecks Memorial United Methodist Church when they lived in Maryville), DAR, Tuckaleechee Garden Club, and Tuckaleechee United Methodist Women. She served as President of the United Methodist Women and in many capacities as a member of the church. She served many years as a teacher in the children's department and served on the worship and altar guild. She started some church traditions for the Christmas season - the "Hanging of the Greens", making wreaths, and Chrismons for the Christmas tree. She will be remembered for the many flowers gathered from her yard and placed on the altar for Sunday worship.
She was a wonderful mother, grandmother, teacher, and loyal and dedicated friend to anyone that was fortunate enough to know her.
In the words of a family friend . . . she was a sweet, smart lady . . . one of a kind!
She was special!
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Tuckaleechee United Methodist Cemetery fund.
Family will receive friends from 4:00 until 6:00 PM, Sunday, September 25, 2022 at Smith Trinity Chapel. Funeral service will be at 6:00 PM with Rev. Richard Rudesill officiating. Family and friends will assemble for interment at 11:00 AM, Monday, September 26, 2022 at Tuckaleechee United Methodist Church Cemetery.
