Elizabeth "Betty" Wallace, age 97 of Markesan and formerly of Fox Lake and Beloit, Wisconsin, passed away peacefully on October 12, 2024, at Markesan Resident Home.
A memorial gathering for Betty will take place on Friday, October 25, 2024 at Cornerstone Funeral & Cremation Services, 135 Keller Blvd., Beaver Dam, from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the memorial service at 12:00 p.m.
She was born at home on June 25, 1927, in Mount Hope, Wisconsin, the third child of Leonard and Ada (Horsfall) Beadle.
Betty was born with beautiful auburn-red hair and a spirited personality to match. Betty graduated from Beloit Memorial High School Class of 1945, she attended nursing school at Madison General Hospital, which later merged with Methodist Hospital and changed its name to Meriter Hospital. After completing a six-month internship at the Cook County Hospital in Chicago, Betty graduated in 1948 as a registered nurse.
Betty married Lester D. Wallace on May 21, 1949, at the First United Methodist Church in downtown Beloit. They farmed in Turtle Township for twenty years. After selling the dairy they purchased the Blodgett farm on the east side of Beloit. About this time Betty decided to return to work part-time at Beloit Memorial Hospital as a nurse on the surgical floor. The farm was eventually sold to the City of Beloit for the Gateway development.
Betty was very involved in the community and was a member of the Turtle Grange, Wisconsin State Grange, Turtle Homemakers Club, the First United Methodist Church, and a 4-H sewing leader. She loved finding old furniture for a bargain and refinishing it. Her home was filled with beautiful, refinished furniture such as an upright player piano, a roll-top desk, and an old pump organ. She was a wonderful cook and baker. Betty was also an excellent seamstress and made most of the girls' clothes. She also loved knitting and made beautiful blankets for all the newborn babies in the family.
Summer vacation was always the first week in August after the 4-H Fair, at "Grandpa's cabin" on the Lower Eau Claire Lake near Gordon, Wisconsin. Betty and Lester loved traveling and were thrilled to visit all 50 states, many trips which were organized through the Grange. In 1998 Lester and Betty moved to Fox Lake, Wisconsin to enjoy lake life and family activities in their retirement. Lester and Betty also made the trip of a lifetime when they took their children and spouses to Ireland, Scotland, and England to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary.
Betty is survived by her two children, Nancy Wallace (Tim Ramsey) of Beloit and Peter (Sue) Wallace of Green Lake; eleven grandchildren, Brian MacLeish, Dr. Sarah (Sabbas) MacLeish Koumoundouros, Dr. Matthew Wallace, Timothy (Nitasha) Wallace, LeaAnne (Dr. Rajash) Patel, Lynette Erickson, Lisa Ellis, Laura (Dave) Albright, Jeremy (Kelley) Thrasher, Jim (Frances) Ramsey, Bethany (Tao) Van Dong; and eighteen great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 62 years, Lester Wallace; daughter Susan Wallace MacLeish, her parents, brother William (Bill) Beadle, sisters Anne Squires and Virginia Johnston; and grandson Sergeant Andrew Wallace, who died in Iraq.
The family would like to express sincerest thanks to the entire staff at Markesan Nursing Home, North Terrace Assisted Living and Anna's House. Also, the love and care given by Green Lake Hospice. Memorials in Betty's name can be given to SSM Health at Home Hospice, 745 South St., Suite 4, Green Lake, WI.
