Elizabeth "Tootsie" DuRant,91, the youngest child of the late Bethel Sr. and Anne Elizabeth Snow DuRant, passed away on August 11, 2021, at McLeod Hospice House in Florence, SC. She was born on December 7, 1929, near Hemingway, SC. A graveside memorial service will be held August 21, 2021, at Union United Methodist Church, 8209 Rose Hill Road, Georgetown, SC 29440, with Reverend Bill Rogers, III, officiating. Miss DuRant graduated from Pleasant Hill High School and Columbia College. She received Masters degrees from Winthrop University and the University of South Carolina. She taught in the public school system for ten years. However, God placed a calling on her heart to serve the people of Brazil as a missionary. She spent five years on the mission field. Upon her return to South Carolina, she settled in Columbia and worked as the circulation librarian at Columbia College for 25 years. Additionally, she worked in the Columbia College archives. Her love and devotion to Columbia College was evident by her service in the Alumnae Evening Club and as a member of the college Alumnae Council. In recognition of her contributions to Columbia College, she was a recipient of the Columbia College Medallion. Elizabeth served her Lord and her church, College Place United Methodist, as a Sunday School teacher, Chairperson of the History Committee, Chairperson of the Church Council, and President of the United Methodist Women. She also participated in a line dancing club that entertained at retirement homes. She was preceded in death by her brothers and sisters and their spouses: John Wesley and Emily; Bethel, Jr. and Mary Lois; Henry Hill; Willie Snow and Lynn; Itly Wilson and Patricia; Lottie DuRant Boykin and Robert; Margaret DuRant Hall and Gene; nephews-Johnny, Howard, Nelson, Henry and Will DuRant and her very dear friend, Sarah M. Dawsey. She is survived by her sister-in-law, "Nickie" DuRant and many beloved nephews, nieces, great nephews, great nieces, great-great nephews and nieces, cousins, and a host of friends. "Tootsie" was a woman of tremendous faith and boundless love. She lived as the hands and feet of Christ. She will be remembered for her kindness, gentle spirit, devotion to her family and her love of all of God's creatures including her beloved pets. Graveside services, directed by Morris Funeral Home of Hemingway, SC, will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, August 21, 2021 in the Union United Methodist Church Cemetery,8209 Rose Hill Road, Georgetown, SC 29440. Memorials may be made to College Place United Methodist Church, 4809 Colonial Drive, Columbia, South Carolina 29203 or to Columbia College, 1301 Columbia College Drive, Columbia, South Carolina 29203 or to the charity of one's choice.
