Elizabeth Ann Stoughton Dobson passed away on February 25, 2020. Beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and wife. Betty was born in Lancaster, NH March 21, 1932 to Carroll and Kathleen Bernier Stoughton. She spent her childhood in Lancaster, one of five siblings. Being the daughter of the school headmaster, Betty took on a special responsibility on her shoulders. She was a star student athlete and had an avid love for dancing at Forrest Lake. After graduation, she enrolled in the nursing program at Massachusetts General Hospital where she became a registered nurse of the famed MGH. While at school, on a blind date, she met her future husband. The love of her life, Chuck, was an Air Force 2nd lieutenant who was attending MIT for meteorological training. He graduated and was sent to New Mexico; and for a year they continued their romance, commuting between Boston and New Mexico, where she joined him after her graduation. They married in September 1953.
Betty had a full nursing career, working a variety of hospitals and assignments as they moved for Chuck's career. Her longest assignment, and most passionate work, was for Planned Parenthood in Sewickley, PA where she counseled women on family planning. She will be remembered for her smile, her laugh, and her dancing. She hosted parties, bridge games and school activities, was always active and willing to take on challenges. In her last ten years, she valiantly battled Alzheimer's. The family will forever be grateful to her caregivers at Arden Court and Manor Care, and to Elsy, who kept her smiling until the end.
She is survived by Chuck, her husband of 66 years, four children and their spouses, Dave and Ceil McCloy Dobson in Englewood, FL, Julie and Chet Thaker in Potomac, MD, Kathy and Jeff Ix in Boston, MA, and John and Kathy Dobson in West Chester, PA. She leaves twelve grandchildren, a brother and two sisters and many nieces and nephews to remember her.
Visitation will be held at 10:00 AM Monday March 2, 2020 at the Bailey Funeral Home, 210 Main Street, Lancaster, NH. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at All Saints Catholic Church in Lancaster at 11:00 AM. Father Matthew Schultz will officiate. Following the service there will be a reception for friends and family held at the Mountain View Grand Clubhouse.
