Elisabeth Ann "Beth" Wharton (nee McCarthy), age 79 of Allen, Texas, passed away October 3, 2022. She was born on January 5, 1943, in Jersey City, New Jersey, to James Sinclair McCarthy and Dorothy Veronica McCarthy. Beth was a proud graduate of Benedictine Academy of Elizabeth, New Jersey, and Newark State College. Beth married the love of her life, James Harry Wharton ("Jim"), on August 7, 1965. Soon after their wedding, they were transferred from New Jersey to Cleveland, Ohio, beginning their journey with Celanese Chemical. Beth took all of their transfers in stride, making new friends at all their new locations while also keeping in touch with old friends. All three of their children-Ellen, Janet, and Jack-were born in Cleveland, Ohio. Beth and Jim made sitting down to dinner every night with their family a priority and never missed their children's games or performances. They also instilled a commitment and love of God and were active members of their Catholic Churches in each of their new hometowns. Upon moving to Texas, Beth became an active parishioner at All Saint's Catholic Church in 1978, where she was also an active member of Church Women United and the Dallas Deanery. Jim instilled a love of travel in Beth, and throughout their lives together, they traveled across the world, voyaging on cruises including multiple times through the Panama Canal and throughout Asia. Jim and Beth retired in 1997 to Pensacola, Florida, and loved cruising the Sound in their boat, being involved with the Sacred Heart Hospital Auxiliary, and volunteering in the community. Jim and Beth returned to Dallas, Texas, to be closer to their family in 2006 and enjoyed being a part of their grandchildren's sporting events and accomplishments and being an active part of their lives. Following Jim's passing in 2012, Beth reinvented herself. Already an active member of St. Jude Catholic Church in Allen, Texas, she became more involved in the Church, and found new friends in her Grief Support Group and the Allen Community Center. She made dear friends and bravely began traveling the world as a widow. She was particularly fond and proud of her trip with St. Jude to Israel and the Holy Land. Beth was an avid sports fan, especially following her grandsons' sports at Highland Park High School, Coppell Lacrosse, and Faith Christian. Beth was a welcomed part of the HPHS football parent's group and actively traveled to all of the HPHS football games during their 2017 State Football Championship. Beth bravely faced the challenges of endometrial cancer. She trusted the Lord's plan for her and never wavered in her trust. We are thankful for all who provided loving care, especially Dr. Tania Tarjan, and all the family and friends who traveled across the country to visit with her before her passing, especially her best friend of over 65 years, Barbara Langella. Preceded in death by her beloved husband, Jim, parents Dorothy and James McCarthy, infant brother James, niece Jean Wharton, and brother-in-law Ken Vincent. Beth is survived by her twin daughters, Ellen Smith and husband, Robert, of Dallas, Texas, and their children, Sydney and James "Jay" Smith; Janet Culpepper and husband, Douglas, of New Braunfels, Texas, and their children, Madeleine and Analisa Culpepper; son, Jack Wharton and wife, April, of Coppell, Texas, and their sons, John Graham, Jacob, and Knox Wharton; sister, Kathleen Wharton, and husband, Robert, of Pinehurst, North Carolina; sister, Maureen Vincent of Scotch Plains, New Jersey; three nieces and nephews, and many other loving family members and friends. A Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, October 11, 2022, at St. Jude Catholic Church, Allen, Texas, with Father Arthur Unachukwu serving as Church Celebrant. A Visitation followed by a Rosary service will be held at 5:00 p.m., Monday, October 10, 2022, at St. Jude Catholic Church.
