Help us celebrate Elene! Please share your stories and photos, and invite others who remember Elene.
Elene Madge (Koehler) Sheldon, 94, of Lebanon, New Hampshire, passed away on Sunday, May 22, 2022, with her daughter by her side. Born (April 23, 1928) and raised in Nevada, Missouri, Elene was the only child of Herman and Ella Koehler. Elene is survived by her children: Greg Sheldon (Kim) of Kansas City, Missouri; Jim Sheldon (Monique) of Bonner Springs, Kansas; and Nancy Nowell (Peter) of Lebanon, New Hampshire. She had 6 grandchildren - Justin Sheldon, Laura Juranek, Amelia Sheldon, Miles Sheldon, Michael Sheldon, and Lena Nowell. She had 4 great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Sheldon.
Elene lived most of her adult life in the Kansas City area where she attended college, married, and raised her family. She was an active member of Asbury United Methodist Church in Prairie Village, Kansas. She taught Adult Sunday School there for many years. She moved to New Hampshire in 2000 to live near her daughter, and she enjoyed exercising at the CCBA's Witherell Center, going to local farmers' markets, and attending events at Opera North. Elene was a true lover of life, and she enjoyed many things including travel, classical music, opera, art, books, languages, animals (especially dogs), long walks (especially on Marginal Way in Ogunquit, Maine), cooking, eating good food, and conversation. She loved to laugh and was an open-minded and welcoming person - although she did not tolerate "tomfoolery" well. She was a dedicated member of the Democratic Party, and she believed strongly in people taking care of each other. Her death will forever leave a gap in the hearts of those who loved her, but the memory of her smile, her energy, and her enjoyment of all that life had to offer will be cherished by those left behind.
The immediate family will gather to celebrate her life. In lieu of flowers, a donation could be made in her name to the Jack Byrne Center for Palliative and Hospice Care in Lebanon, New Hampshire, or another charity dedicated to the arts or animal welfare.
