Eleanor Janice (Estee) Osher, 97, died on Friday, August 6, 2021 in the caring and loving community of Delmar Gardens of Gwinnett in Lawrenceville, Georgia. From her birth on December 4, 1923 to her death on August 6, 2021, she nourished people around her with her love, faith, hospitality and friendly smile. She was born in the family home in the tiny town of Hecla, South Dakota to Charles and Vera (Hines) Estee. She had older twin brothers and one younger sister. Eleanor excelled in English and was Editor of the high school newspaper. She also won many state contests when she performed solos on the French horn. While in high school, Eleanor and Clare started dating at age 15. Before marriage, Eleanor studied at Jamestown College in North Dakota for one year. The following year she was happy to transfer to Northern State Teachers College in Aberdeen, South Dakota where Clare was a student. They were later married on November 12, 1944 at the United Methodist Church in Hecla, South Dakota before Clare left to serve in the army during World War II. While Clare was in the army, Eleanor worked for the Hecla Bank President as his secretary and then later worked at Northern State Teachers College by assisting veterans as they returned from war. After the war, Clare began his long, rewarding career with International Harvester Company. Eleanor and Clare moved many times and lived in three Midwest states, eventually retiring in Bettendorf, Iowa. Eleanor's favorite hobby was art. She painted over 100 portraits and landscapes. She belonged to community art groups and also illustrated part of a book entitled, HECLA, SOUTH DAKOTA, "Life in a Small Town 1886-2011, 125th Anniversary Edition". In retirement years, Eleanor and Clare both served their community through their church and local hospital. Eleanor was a happy, cheerful, talkative person who had the gift of hospitality. Eleanor is survived by her two married daughters, Cynthia (Seungnam) Oh of Hacienda Heights, CA and Rebecca (Toby) Johnson of Lilburn, GA.; she had seven grandchildren; and twenty great-grandchildren. Eleanor was preceded in death by her husband, Clare Osher; and her siblings Charles Estee, William Estee, and Beverly (Estee) Crampton. The family will receive friends on Friday, August 20, 2021 from 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM in the gathering room at Snellville United Methodist Church, Snellville, GA. A Celebration of Life Service will follow at 11:00 AM at the church. Pastor Rob Sweet and Rev. Dr. Quincy D. Brown will officiate. A graveside service will take place on Tuesday, August 24, 2021 at 10:00 AM at Davenport Memorial Park in Davenport, IA. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made, in Eleanor Osher's name, to St. Johns United Methodist Church, 109 E. 14th St., Davenport, IA 52803.
