Eleanor Gill Jenkins Matthews, born August 18th, 1917, widow of the late John Reginald Matthews, Sr., went to be with the Lord at the age of 105 on Thursday, June 1st, 2023.
Eleanor was born in Richmond, VA, and raised by her grandmother in Lakeland, FL. Eleanor moved to California after graduating from high school and worked at Douglas Aircraft, during WWII. While working at Douglas Aircraft, she met and married her husband. Reggie was a soldier stationed at Edwards Military Base, after the war they moved to North Carolina and she went to work at Fort Bragg Military Post. She continued work in the Finance and Accounting Office and later became a supervisor. She worked there for 26 years until she retired. After retiring, she and her husband traveled aground the world until he passed. Eleanor lived through the Spanish Flu, two world wars, and the Great Depression, then to beat the Coronavirus at the age of 104 years and 10 months young. She has had a tremendous life, spirit, and strength. Eleanor was blessed with a very independent spirit and lived her life that way. She was very frugal, which could be attributed to living through the Great Depression. At the age of 95, she was still cutting her own lawn and maintaining her home. At that time, she was playing bridge with her friends three days a week and still played once a week after moving to Sumter Grove Senior Living.
Eleanor is survived by two children, John Reginald Matthews, Jr. and his wife Barbara of Castle Hayne, NC and Meredith Gill Holland and her husband Jimmy of Sumter, SC; Three grandchildren, Susan Gill Turner and her husband Mike of Newport News, VA, Margaret Darden Matthews of Charlotte, NC, and Lila Gill Hobgood of Atlantic Beach, NC; Four great-grandchildren, Ella Gill Turner, Alfred Llewellyn Hobgood, Clara Odette Hobgood and Jewell Gooding Hobgood; and Two nieces and one nephew.
A celebration of Eleanor's life will be held at 1:00pm, Saturday, June 10th, 2023, at Cumberland Memorial Gardens Chapel, 4509 Raeford Rd., Fayetteville, NC 20304.
