Eleanor Margarette Carr, 95, of Amarillo, passed away Thursday, October 7, 2021. Services will be at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, October 12, 2021, at Church of Christ at the Colonies with Dick Marcear officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.
Eleanor was born March 14, 1926, in Bartlesville, OK., to John Douglas Young and Susan Melinda Kilpatrick Young. Eleanor was raised by her mother Susan and stepfather, Thomas J. Flood. She worked in her family's bakeries in SW Missouri, NW Arkansas, and NE Oklahoma areas. Eleanor graduated from Cassville, MO. High School and attended the University of Missouri. While home on break she fell in love with Kenneth Lavern Carr and they were married in Little Rock, Arkansas on October 19, 1947.
Eleanor and Kenneth farmed his family farm in Cato, Missouri and then moved to Borger, TX. where they both worked for Phillips Petroleum Co. They moved back to the family farm for a few years and then relocated back to Borger where Eleanor worked for Davis Chevrolet. Eventually they moved to Amarillo, TX. where Eleanor was employed by Cal Farley's Boys Ranch, and then as a secretary at Forrest Hill Elementary School. Eleanor later worked as the secretary to the Director of Music at Amarillo Independent School District until she retired.
Kenneth and Eleanor had two children, Barbara Elaine Smith and James Edwin Carr and were blessed with three grandsons, Jason Cody Smith, Tyler James Carr and Matthew Tanner Smith.
Eleanor was a strong spirit who loved traveling, gardening, canning, playing games, and collecting. She was a lifelong learner and could intelligently converse on almost any topic.
Eleanor is preceded in death by her parents, sister Betty Harkins, brothers Clinton Young, George "Buddy" Young, and Bob Flood, husband Kenneth Carr and grandson Tyler Carr.
She is survived by daughter Barbara Smith and husband Randall, son Jim Carr, and grandson's Jason Smith and wife Ashley and Matthew Smith, and brother Richard Flood and wife Opaline and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of friends all of whom she dearly loved.
The family will receive friends Monday, October 11, from 4-6 pm at Griggs-Schooler-Gordon Funeral Home at 5400 S. Bell, Amarillo, Tx.
