Eleanor Wilkerson Boyd Blackmon, 98, died September 14 at Wills Memorial Hospital after a very brief illness.
Born September 6, 1924 in Raleigh, North Carolina to Jessie Wilkerson and Clarence L. Boyd, she was the oldest of three children.
Eleanor served as music director and director of children and adult choirs at Washington First United Methodist Church for more than 20 years, then as organist and choirmaster at the Episcopal Church of the Mediator until she was 91. She taught music in Wilkes County Public Schools for 18 years.
Survivors include her husband, Stephen E. Blackmon of Southern Manor Senior Living in Washington; her brother, Clarence L. Boyd, Jr (Samantha) of Garner, NC; her daughter Eleanor Elmira (Myra) Blackmon of Washington; Stephen Elisha Blackmon, Jr. (Evelyn) of Nashville; Phillip Boyd Blackmon (Carol) of Midland, GA; Jeffrey Earl Blackmon (Nancy) of Littleton, CO; and her "fifth child" Raymond Hughes of Thomasville, GA and Berlin. She had eight grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.
There will be a family-only Burial Service at the Episcopal Church of the Mediator on Saturday, September 24, followed at 3:30 p.m. by a memorial gathering of family and friends at the First United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall. All are welcome at the gathering.
